Did he subsequently take his children out to lunch on Fatherâs Day and give them that rousing âFame is fleetingâ speech? Nope. (But could David Schwimmer smell the Emmy nomination on that one when he read the script? I think we all know the answer to that.) Anyway, the show is candy for someone like me who enjoys reading both thrillers and true crime, but in the end I find myself wanting to know the real stories, unembellished by screenwriters, actors, and directors, and told in the playersâ own words. So I started looking for books written by the real people involved, and there are a LOT of them. Like, hundredsâ"from tabloid-style âI helped O.J. get away with murderâ and exploitative âtrueâ tales of hangers-on in the O.J./Nicole circle, to critically panned books by Johnnie Cochran and Robert Shapiro that donât seem to cast any new or relevant light on what I already know. After my deep dive into O.J.-land, these are the four Iâm interested in reading, and that might paint a clearer picture of all the facts . . . or not. The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin This is the book on which the series is based. Toobin himself is a credited consultant on the show, though he has acknowledged that the TV show âis not a documentary.â Now Iâm curious to read the book and get just the facts, maam, from Toobinâs relentlessly reported, widely praised ânonfiction masterpiece.â Without a Doubt by Marcia Clark with Teresa Carpenter Part memoir and part exhaustive case study, Marcia Clarkâs #1 New York Times bestselling book about trying (and surviving) âThe Trial of the Centuryâ is the only account by a female attorney in the courtroom. (The other female attorney was Shawn Chapman Holley on the defense team. She has not written a book about the trial, but she did go on to be Lindsay Lohans defense lawyer. These are the things we learn when writing for Book Riot, people.) When the case was being tried, race and celebrity were the flashpoints on which most of the argumentsâ"and public opinionâ"were built. But the FX series has zeroed in quite forcefully on the sexism that was also at play in the courtroom, and Clark is the only one to give voice to that bizarre and undignified angle of the story. In Contempt by Christopher Darden with Jess Walter Another #1 New York Times bestseller, Dardenâs book is a behind-the-scenes look at not only the trial itself, but his personal role as foil to Johnnie Cochran. Though Marcia Clark was the lead prosecutor, all eyes were on the two African-American lawyers, battling it out on two sides of the table over the fate of an African-American defendant. Darden was accused of being an âUncle Tomâ on the O.J. case, but famously and consistently put justice ahead of all other issues, including race. (P.S. according to Wikipedia, the co-writer is that Jess Walter!) If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer by O.J. Simpson, with contributions from Fred Goldman and Kim Goldman Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive. . . In what is one of, if not THE most f*cked up publishing story of the century, HarperCollins commissioned O.J. Simpsonâs own account of how he would have committed the murders if he had committed the murders. What the what?!? Harper eventually thought better of it and cancelled the book (and fired notorious publisher Judith Regan over the whole fiasco), but the Goldman family, who viewed the manuscript as a clear, nonfiction confession, fought to have it made available to the public. A judge awarded them all rights to the manuscript, which they published in full (all of O.J.âs words were approved by the Juice himself), along with additional essays and commentary by the Goldmans. But tellingly, the bookâs cover now prints the word âIfâ in minuscule font, inside the âI.â Go on, see if you can find it. I now have six figures of debt because of those mistakes. I took out $57,000 for my undergraduate degree and $40,000 for my masterââ¬â¢s which I graduated with at the end of 2014. You probably noticed that those donââ¬â¢t equal six figures of debt. That is because my accumulating interest pushed me well over the edge. I have around $30,000 JUST IN INTEREST! $30,000! Thatââ¬â¢s how much the average student graduates with! Itââ¬â¢s sickening. While the interest rate was a problem, it was also my lack of understanding and other mistakes that helped lead to six figures of student loan debt. If you are in college or are preparing to go, use my mistakes as a lesson to graduate in a better financial place than I did. Mistakes I Made Before I Took Out My Student Loans 1) I Didnt Apply For Scholarships Honestly, I believe this was due to lack of self-confidence. I was an average high school student. I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and participated in a few extracurricular activities. People I knew were applying for scholarships, but I didnââ¬â¢t think I would ever win one, so I never tried. Who knows how much help I could have missed out on? If you are a decent student, I highly encourage you to apply for several scholarships so that you have a chance to have some money for college and in turn will need fewer student loans. You have nothing to lose but a little time filling out applications. Even if you donââ¬â¢t win a scholarship, you will never have to wonder if youve made a mistake by not applying in the first place. 2) Not Checking Interest Rates or Understanding How It Works I really really wish I had understood interest and had investigated interest rates. While the rates on federal loans are set, the rates on private student loans, even fixed-rate loans, can change according to your parents credit history. I only had one loan through Sallie Mae because, at the time, if you lived off campus you couldnââ¬â¢t have federal loans. They changed that the following year. It was then that I should have applied for loans with various providers to get a better interest rate. I believe my interest rate started at 7% but right before I refinanced in 2016 it had climbed to 11% because it was a variable rate, and I did nothave any control over the fluctuations as I would have with a fixed rate loan. I also should have understood that, aside from subsidized loans, interest starts to accrue from the moment the loans kick in. For some reason I only thought about interest after graduation. It kept accruing when I dropped to part-time for a short period and in times of forbearance and deferment. Interest never stops accruing until the debt is paid. If you havenââ¬â¢t taken out loans yet, I highly recommend you shop around when considering private loans and keep an eye on that interest! 3) Lack of Research Into Schools and Majors This was probably one of my biggest mistakes that I hope you can avoid with your college journey. I didnââ¬â¢t properly research schools and just picked one that was close by. It wasnââ¬â¢t a good fit (too big) so I transferred to the next closest school. The second school was also not a good fit (too strict a curriculum) and I then switched to the school that I ultimately graduated from. I was equally as unprepared when it came to choosing a major. It shifted a bit from Animal Science to Wildlife Biology, and then finally I created my own major which consisted of wildlife and other science classes, and hands-on internships. Because of my lack of research and these two occurrences, I lost credits switching schools and majors which meant I lost MONEY. A LOT of money. If you are getting ready for college, do your research on which schools can give you merit scholarships, which schools you would fit well in, and figure out what major you will be happy with. This will save you so much money as well as time. If you are currently in college and thinking about switching majors or transferring schools, think about it very carefully and donââ¬â¢t make the change lightly. Put some effort into your research and figure out how much you would lose before you make the switch. Only do so if itââ¬â¢s something you know you will stick with once you make the change. Mistakes I Made During College 4) Not Using My Job to Make In-School Payments One of the surprising things about how much student loan debt I got myself into is that I did have a job all the way through my undergraduate degree. I didnââ¬â¢t have one during graduate school only because it was a one-year, full-time program and they told us not to do outside work. Since I had a job, I could have been making payments to my student loans while I was in school even if it was just to cover the cost of interest. If you are still in college or getting ready to start college, plan to make at least some amount of payment to your student loans. I canââ¬â¢t stress this enough. You will be in such a better place financially when you graduate if you have been making any kind of payments. Living as frugally as you can while you have student loans to repay is something to consider. Especially if you dont have a job while in college. And if you do have a job, put whatever you dont need towards the repayment. 5) Never Creating a Budget It wasnââ¬â¢t until December/January that I finally figured out that I needed to budget. Until then I just checked my bank account and made sure I didnââ¬â¢t dip too low in funds. Just watching was a big mistake because I have no idea what I was spending all my money on. Once I started budgeting, all my money started making more sense. I now put 50% of my take-home pay towards my debt and other financial goals. I can only imagine what my financial situation would have looked like if I had started a budget in college and monitored my finances like an adult. Start a budget now, even if you are reading this as a junior or senior in high school and donââ¬â¢t yet have a job. Budget whatever allowance you make or birthday money you get. Track what you bring in and what you spend. The sooner you start, the sooner you will begin making better financial decisions (though it is never too late to learn). Wherever you are in your college journey, choose a budgeting program and start budgeting today. 6) No Plan For Faster Payoff When I took out my loans I knew I had a 10-year repayment term. It never dawned on me that I could (and should) pay them off faster. I just thought everyone paid them off over the standard period. I wish I had known that it is better to pay them off faster and not have to pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in interest. I should have had a plan to pay them off faster from the beginning. This is now what I encourage everyone to do and I have even created a debt payoff challengeto encourage people to make an actionable plan to get out of debt faster. Make extra payments, refinance, or do what you need to do to pay your student loans off faster and escape the accruing interest. Mistakes I Made After Graduating 7) Not Understanding Capitalization Did you know that when your student loans enter repayment your interest capitalizes? I sure didnââ¬â¢t! That information hit me like a ton of bricks. I was now paying interest ON my interest! Your interest will also capitalize when you switch repayment plans or finish a forbearance or deferment period. If you find yourself needing to postpone payments after graduation, try to at least pay the interest during this period so you donââ¬â¢t have to pay interest on your interest. 8) I Didnt Use The Grace Period Wisely Another big mistake was not using the ââ¬Å"grace periodâ⬠wisely. This kind of goes along with not making payments while in school. Once you graduate you have a 6-month period in which you donââ¬â¢t need to make payments. This allows people time to get a job after college. This is all well and good, but: you could be using this time to make progress on your student loan debt and your interest is going to capitalize at the end of the 6 months, so you are just adding 6 more monthsââ¬â¢ worth of interest to your capitalization. Instead, you should be making payments to all your student loans OR you can get strategic and start putting money towards the lowest amount (snowballing your debt payments) or to your highest interest like private loans (also known as the avalanche debt method). Avoiding These Mistakes I hope you have taken what I have to say to heart. Please use my experiences as a lesson and avoid the same mistakes that Ive made. By paying attention to details , budgeting, and reading the fine print, you can graduate from college in a better financial place and not be saddled with six figures of student loan debt. The Chorus as a Homonym - 1168 Words
In Jean Anouilhââ¬â¢s Antigone and in Euripidesââ¬â¢s Medea the Chorus is both a tool for characterization and representation of theme; however, the ways they function in their respective plays are noticeably different. The differences in the way the Choruses function in each respective play make the name of the character ââ¬Å"the Chorusâ⬠a homonym, same name different meaning. The Chorus in Antigone functions to incorporate the technique of metatheatre. The purpose of metatheatre is to provide a separation between the audience and the actors in the play through ââ¬Å"constant direct and indirect reminders that what [the audience] is watching is a playâ⬠(Freeman xxxvii). All of the metatheatrical techniques in the play to distance the audience from the tragedy keep Anouilh safe in this part from criticism from the Greekââ¬â¢s because otherwise they could take the heartlessness of people described offensively. The Chorus in Euripidesââ¬â¢s Medea mainly functions as the commentator of drama, as a Chorus in a classical Greek drama would, or the voice of reason that often times sympathizes with Medea. The Chorus, made up of Corinthian women, comments on the drama in light of the morals of the Greek society of the time, such as moderation, which helps the Greek audience in understanding the play and Medea herself. Also, being the voice of reason, the Chorus not only aids the audience in understanding the play but also tries to aid Medea in understanding herself and her irrationality. The main point that the Chorus tries to explain to Medea is that she should not be hurt by Jasonââ¬â¢s actions beca use ââ¬Å"it often happensâ⬠and if she does not forget about it she will ââ¬Å"waste away grieving too much for himâ⬠(Euripides 6).
