But once I started watching the series, I realized how little I rememberedâ€"or maybe ever knew to begin withâ€"about the crime and trial “of the century.” I can’t go an episode without stopping at least three time to Googleâ€"whether O.J. really left a suicide note claiming that “at times [he] felt like a battered husband” (he did); or if Robert Shapiro really tried on that glove in court (he didn’t). Did Marcia Clark spend a weekend with Christopher Darden in Oakland? Yes! Did Robert Kardashian really beg O.J. not to kill himself in Kim’s bedroom? Yes! Did he subsequently take his children out to lunch on Father’s Day and give them that rousing “Fame is fleeting” speech? Nope. (But could David Schwimmer smell the Emmy nomination on that one when he read the script? I think we all know the answer to that.) Anyway, the show is candy for someone like me who enjoys reading both thrillers and true crime, but in the end I find myself wanting to know the real stories, unembellished by screenwriters, actors, and directors, and told in the players’ own words. So I started looking for books written by the real people involved, and there are a LOT of them. Like, hundredsâ€"from tabloid-style “I helped O.J. get away with murder” and exploitative “true” tales of hangers-on in the O.J./Nicole circle, to critically panned books by Johnnie Cochran and Robert Shapiro that don’t seem to cast any new or relevant light on what I already know. After my deep dive into O.J.-land, these are the four I’m interested in reading, and that might paint a clearer picture of all the facts . . . or not. The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin This is the book on which the series is based. Toobin himself is a credited consultant on the show, though he has acknowledged that the TV show “is not a documentary.” Now I’m curious to read the book and get just the facts, maam, from Toobin’s relentlessly reported, widely praised “nonfiction masterpiece.” Without a Doubt by Marcia Clark with Teresa Carpenter Part memoir and part exhaustive case study, Marcia Clark’s #1 New York Times bestselling book about trying (and surviving) “The Trial of the Century” is the only account by a  female attorney in the courtroom. (The other female attorney was Shawn Chapman Holley on the defense team. She has not written a book about the trial, but she did go on to be Lindsay Lohans defense lawyer. These are the things we learn when writing for Book Riot, people.) When the case was being tried, race and celebrity were the flashpoints on which most of the argumentsâ€"and public opinionâ€"were built. But the FX series has zeroed in quite forcefully on the sexism that was also at play in the courtroom, and Clark is the only one to give voice to that bizarre and undignified angle of the story. In Contempt by Christopher Darden with Jess Walter Another #1 New York Times bestseller, Darden’s book is a behind-the-scenes look at not only the trial itself, but his personal role as foil to Johnnie Cochran. Though Marcia Clark was the lead prosecutor, all eyes were on the two African-American lawyers, battling it out on two sides of the table over the fate of an African-American defendant. Darden was accused of being an “Uncle Tom” on the O.J. case, but famously and consistently put justice ahead of all other issues, including race. (P.S. according to Wikipedia, the co-writer is  that Jess Walter!) If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer by O.J. Simpson, with contributions from Fred Goldman and Kim Goldman Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive. . . In what is one of, if not THE most f*cked up publishing story of the century, HarperCollins commissioned  O.J. Simpson’s own account of how he would have committed the murders if he had committed the murders. What the what?!? Harper eventually thought better of it and cancelled the book (and fired notorious publisher Judith Regan over the whole fiasco), but the Goldman family, who viewed the manuscript as a clear, nonfiction confession, fought to have it made available to the public. A judge awarded them all rights to the manuscript, which they published in full (all of O.J.’s words were approved by the Juice himself), along with additional essays and commentary by the Goldmans. But tellingly, the book’s cover now  prints the word “If” in minuscule font, inside the “I.” Go on, see if you can find it. I now have six figures of debt because of those mistakes. I took out $57,000 for my undergraduate degree and $40,000 for my master’s which I graduated with at the end of 2014. You probably noticed that those don’t equal six figures of debt. That is because my accumulating interest pushed me well over the edge. I have around $30,000 JUST IN INTEREST! $30,000! That’s how much the average student graduates with! It’s sickening. While the interest rate was a problem, it was also my lack of understanding and other mistakes that helped lead to six figures of student loan debt. If you are in college or are preparing to go, use my mistakes as a lesson to graduate in a better financial place than I did. Mistakes I Made Before I Took Out My Student Loans 1) I Didnt Apply For Scholarships Honestly, I believe this was due to lack of self-confidence. I was an average high school student. I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and participated in a few extracurricular activities. People I knew were applying for scholarships, but I didn’t think I would ever win one, so I never tried. Who knows how much help I could have missed out on? If you are a decent student, I highly encourage you to apply for several scholarships so that you have a chance to have some money for college and in turn will need fewer student loans. You have nothing to lose but a little time filling out applications. Even if you don’t win a scholarship, you will never have to wonder if youve made a mistake by not applying in the first place. 2) Not Checking Interest Rates or Understanding How It Works I really really wish I had understood interest and had investigated interest rates. While the rates on federal loans are set, the rates on private student loans, even fixed-rate loans, can change according to your parents credit history. I only had one loan through Sallie Mae because, at the time, if you lived off campus you couldn’t have federal loans. They changed that the following year. It was then that I should have applied for loans with various providers to get a better interest rate. I believe my interest rate started at 7% but right before I refinanced in 2016 it had climbed to 11% because it was a variable rate, and I did nothave any control over the fluctuations as I would have with a fixed rate loan. I also should have understood that, aside from subsidized loans, interest starts to accrue from the moment the loans kick in. For some reason I only thought about interest after graduation. It kept accruing when I dropped to part-time for a short period and in times of forbearance and deferment. Interest never stops accruing until the debt is paid. If you haven’t taken out loans yet, I highly recommend you shop around when considering private loans and keep an eye on that interest! 3) Lack of Research Into Schools and Majors This was probably one of my biggest mistakes that I hope you can avoid with your college journey. I didn’t properly research schools and just picked one that was close by. It wasn’t a good fit (too big) so I transferred to the next closest school. The second school was also not a good fit (too strict a curriculum) and I then switched to the school that I ultimately graduated from. I was equally as unprepared when it came to choosing a major. It shifted a bit from Animal Science to Wildlife Biology, and then finally I created my own major which consisted of wildlife and other science classes, and hands-on internships. Because of my lack of research and these two occurrences, I lost credits switching schools and majors which meant I lost MONEY. A LOT of money. If you are getting ready for college, do your research on which schools can give you merit scholarships, which schools you would fit well in, and figure out what major you will be happy with. This will save you so much money as well as time. If you are currently in college and thinking about switching majors or transferring schools, think about it very carefully and don’t make the change lightly. Put some effort into your research and figure out how much you would lose before you make the switch. Only do so if it’s something you know you will stick with once you make the change. Mistakes I Made During College 4) Not Using My Job to Make In-School Payments One of the surprising things about how much student loan debt I got myself into is that I did have a job all the way through my undergraduate degree. I didn’t have one during graduate school only because it was a one-year, full-time program and they told us not to do outside work. Since I had a job, I could have been making payments to my student loans while I was in school even if it was just to cover the cost of interest. If you are still in college or getting ready to start college, plan to make at least some amount of payment to your student loans. I can’t stress this enough. You will be in such a better place financially when you graduate if you have been making any kind of payments. Living as frugally as you can while you have student loans to repay is something to consider. Especially if you dont have a job while in college. And if you do have a job, put whatever you dont need towards the repayment. 5) Never Creating a Budget It wasn’t until December/January that I finally figured out that I needed to budget. Until then I just checked my bank account and made sure I didn’t dip too low in funds. Just watching was a big mistake because I have no idea what I was spending all my money on. Once I started budgeting, all my money started making more sense. I now put 50% of my take-home pay towards my debt and other financial goals. I can only imagine what my financial situation would have looked like if I had started a budget in college and monitored my finances like an adult. Start a budget now, even if you are reading this as a junior or senior in high school and don’t yet have a job. Budget whatever allowance you make or birthday money you get. Track what you bring in and what you spend. The sooner you start, the sooner you will begin making better financial decisions (though it is never too late to learn). Wherever you are in your college journey, choose a budgeting program and start budgeting today. 6) No Plan For Faster Payoff When I took out my loans I knew I had a 10-year repayment term. It never dawned on me that I could (and should) pay them off faster. I just thought everyone paid them off over the standard period. I wish I had known that it is better to pay them off faster and not have to pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in interest. I should have had a plan to pay them off faster from the beginning. This is now what I encourage everyone to do and I have even created a debt payoff challengeto encourage people to make an actionable plan to get out of debt faster. Make extra payments, refinance, or do what you need to do to pay your student loans off faster and escape the accruing interest. Mistakes I Made After Graduating 7) Not Understanding Capitalization Did you know that when your student loans enter repayment your interest capitalizes? I sure didn’t! That information hit me like a ton of bricks. I was now paying interest ON my interest! Your interest will also capitalize when you switch repayment plans or finish a forbearance or deferment period. If you find yourself needing to postpone payments after graduation, try to at least pay the interest during this period so you don’t have to pay interest on your interest. 8) I Didnt Use The Grace Period Wisely Another big mistake was not using the â€Å"grace period† wisely. This kind of goes along with not making payments while in school. Once you graduate you have a 6-month period in which you don’t need to make payments. This allows people time to get a job after college. This is all well and good, but: you could be using this time to make progress on your student loan debt and your interest is going to capitalize at the end of the 6 months, so you are just adding 6 more months’ worth of interest to your capitalization. Instead, you should be making payments to all your student loans OR you can get strategic and start putting money towards the lowest amount (snowballing your debt payments) or to your highest interest like private loans (also known as the avalanche debt method). In their study, they applied a high-activity process with infinite small jumps, combining them with the lower-frequency large jumps. In this way, he managed to broaden the Black-Scholes model to a variety of Là ©vy processes, due to the fact that the latter includes both continuous time diffusion and jump process. Another approach was that of Lord et al. (2007). They examined the pricing of early-exercise options by introducing a novel quadrature-based method which mainly relies on Fast-Fourier transformations called the Convolution method. Their work was a combination of the recent quadrature pricing methods of Andricopoulos et al. (2003) and OSullivan (2005) and the Fourier transformation methods initiated by Carr and Madan (1999), Raible (2000) and Lewis (2001). The main idea of the procedure applied was to reformulate the commonly used risk-neutral valuation formula on the basis that it forms a convolution. This can be done in various ways; springs are used on ears suspension, viscous fluid is used in aircraft landing gear and on the Apache aircraft, rubber lead/lag dampers are used on the rotor head to minimizes the vibration from the blades. An example where forced mechanical vibration leading to resonance has resulted in failure is the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Washington State, USA in 1940. Problems began to arise when on particularly windy days, construction workers on the bridge noticed that the deck oscillated vertically giving the bridge the nickname ‘Galloping Grittier’, nevertheless the bridge was opened to traffic on 1st July 1940. The ‘Galloping motion continued and various attempts to correct it proved ineffective. These included extra strengthening cables and hydraulic dampers. Fig 1 On the day of the collapse, 7th November 1940, the wind speed was MPH which resulted in, at first small oscillations of the deck. The wind caused a phenomenon known as rare elastic fluttering (fig 1), where the centre of the deck remains still and either side of the bridge twists in opposite directions. This then escalated into a resonance effect as the oscillations increased periodically. Once the vibration had Ovid past the bridges damping mechanisms and matched the natural frequency the result was unavoidable as resonance took hold (fig 2). Fig 2 Further damping recommendations were made 5 days before the collapse of the bridge but were too late to save it. Two solutions were proposed: 1. To drill holes in the lateral girders and along the deck so that the airflow could circulate through them (reducing lift forces) 2. To give more aerodynamic shape to the transverse section of the deck by adding fairings or deflector vanes along the deck, attached to the girder fascia Lessons have been learnt from the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the Bronx Whetstone Bridge, similar in design to the ‘Galloping Grittier’, was reinforced with fat high steel trusses on both sides of the deck shortly after the disaster to weigh down and stiffen the bridge to reduce oscillations. Thankfully no lives were lost in the collapse and as OTTOMH Amman (a leading bridge designer and a member of the investigation team) said when commenting on the new design of the bridge, ‘ if errors, or failure occur, we must accept them as a price for human progress’. My own experiences of vibration issues on aircraft are generally related to UT of balance rotors or drive shaft components. There have been several instances of loose tail rotor shapeless due to vibration from the tail rotors and cracking on a cooling fan connected to the tail rotor drive due to a worn bearing hangar also causing vibration. Another example of a vibration issue I have been involved with, is struggling to track and balance the main rotors due to a modification which records stress on critical components. For instance, in the movie Astro lashes needed to be long and curl, hence 3D techniques were used to achieve this feat. It was also used to fabricate vertices, edges and faces (Taylor, 2002). Furthermore, facial expression were also used such as parameterization to obtain a smiling, laughing or angry Astro Boy face or to remove wrinkles and to make these facial expression of Astro more realistic 2D and 3D morphing were also executed (Noh, 1998). Apart from these different other techniques were also implemented such as three fram shooting to emply a full animation, stop images to display a still photo of a crowd or still reaction from Astro Boy, Pull-Cells to make the scene with Astro flying or mving to save people and repetaition technique to illustrate Astro by walking around (Steinberg, 2006). Before rating the movie, we will use eight judging criteria. African Caribbean Pentecostal Churches Theology Religion Essay In this essay, I will establish why African-Caribbean Pentecostal Churches in the United Kingdom are experiencing phenomenal growth in contrast to the decline in the growth of traditional Churches, such as the Church of England and Roman Catholics. I will also enumerate on some Biblical principles that was used in relation to Church growth and other influence of past revivals which the African-Caribbean Pentecostal Churches exploited to arrive at this creditable accomplishment. Similarly, I will indicate some probable cause of the decline in growth of the traditional Churches and ideas borrowed from the Afro-Caribbean Churches that could create a positive change to the growth of the traditional Churches in the United Kingdom. AFRO-CARIBBEAN IDENTITY AND WORSHIP MODE. The Afro-Caribbean Pentecostal Churches are generally the offshoot of African Independent Churches, which are African expression of worldwide Pentecostalism by virtue of their characteristics and origins. According to Harvey Cox, despite the common theological origins, the unique innovative methods of worship differ from those Pentecostals that are influenced by Western Pentecostalism. With time scholars began to recognize their distinct Pentecostal character such as: unique prayer methods, preaching of the word, speaking in tongues, and the praise and worship methods including accentuated music and dancing during services  [1]  . According to Parsons, all Afro-Caribbean or Black-Led Pentecostal Churches do uphold evangelical and fundamentalist understanding of the Bible, of which the texts are considered inerrant and applied strictly to the individual and Church life. This requires a stringent ethical lifestyle that encompasses areas such as being stern against perceived social vices such as: smoking, specific dress code and other distinction between Saintly Holiness and Sinful Worldliness. The required lifestyle is being effectively achieved with week days of Church programs that occupy members leisure time. While the leadership of an Afro-Caribbean Church is potentially hierarchical and authoritarian the system allows for multiple leadership opportunities such as: Sunday school leader, Youth work, Choirs, elders, Women ministry deacons etc. On the contrary, the leadership opportunities given to qualified Afro-Caribbean members in Orthodox Churches are very much limited. This could influence the movement of Black members to Black led Pentecostal Churches.  [2]   The typical Afro-Caribbean Pentecostal Church structure agrees with the analysis of Mclntosh (a professor of pastoral ministry), who reiterated that for a Church to experience Biblical growth they must adhere to some principles indicated below: A commitment to the absolute authority of the Bible, holding on to salvation with a strong desire to abide by Gods great commission (missio dei ) with the monitored evidence of bearing fruit of new converts. Involvement with glorification of God through praise and worship modes, alongside creation of ministries and programs. Development of an effective method of welcoming and nurturing new converts to a maturity level which incorporates baptism and teaching. Recognize Divine empowerment and guidance through the Holy Spirit, which is acquired through prayers. Maintain effective leaders and cultural relevance to the community which they operate, with a structure that is void of barriers to the outside world and a focus on Church planting.  [3]   The foregoing principles are manifested by the Afro-Caribbean Churches which their leaders religiously apply, with a resultant phenomenal growth of members. The zeal exhibited in Church planting explains the wide spread success of Afro-Caribbean Churches all over the United Kingdom, which matches the geographical extension Church growth principle that was demonstrated by in the apostles in the Book of Acts 9:31 where Judea, Galilee and Samaria were reached from Jerusalem.  [4]   Nevertheless, there are viewpoints in opposition to emphasis on acclaimed numerical growths that are comparable with the Afro-Caribbean Churches. An example is that of Newbigin who is a proponent of the spread of the gospel with full consideration of the positive and negative aspects of Culture. He opined that there is no Biblical basis to dwell on successes from numbers related to Church Growth and goal setting. He said that it is a matter determined by the Holy Spirit. He reiterated that it is a defeatist position which can only be held by a failing Pastor  [5]  . IMPACT OF HISTORICAL EVENTS ON AFRO-CARIBBEAN CHURCH GROWTH In consideration of the past decades, Parsons opined that a great influence on the Afro-Caribbean Church Growth is the rejection that antagonised the Afro-Caribbean immigrants and their children in the 1950s and 1960s. Which continued in 1970s and 1980s. The rejection from predominantly White Churches was also experienced by Afro-Caribbean Anglicans, Methodists, and Catholics in the 1960s. Additionally in 1990, TV Channel 4 featured documentaries that cover Black led Churches.  [6]   EMULATING CHURCH GROWTH THEOLOGY The North American Society for Church Growth defined Church Growth as the discipline that researches the nature, expansion, planting, multiplication, function and health of Church as related to the Great Commission.  [7]  The Afro-Caribbean Churches are fully aligned with the three fundamental principles of Church Growth derived by Donald McGavran (1897-1990) the renowned father of Church Growth movement as itemised below: a) Numerical Growth as evidenced by countable converts to the Church is in fact the raison de etre of missions, which must remain an utmost priority, void of distraction from other Church programs. The Bible book of Acts confirms the Church Growth principle of numerical increment of the Church in Acts 2:47 by daily addition of converts by the Lord. The Afro-Caribbean Pentecostal Churches in a typical interactive Sunday service will formally welcome new comers into the Church and also initiate a follow up and visitation process. b) The concept of identifying and profiling an ideal target: implies and all out study of sociological and anthropological approaches that can be strategically directed to particular set of people with the aim of maximising their Chances of conversion to Christianity.  [8]   As earlier mentioned, the Afro-Caribbean Churches imbibe an evangelical culture of reaching out to communities in their immediate environments as well as those very far off with the strategies that bear Church planting in mind. In reaching out to certain cultures with predominantly different migrant groups at various settlements, they essentially use linguistic approaches whereby interpretation of the English language to the local language of certain category of a targeted audience in a community. c) People movement concept describes how the gospel gain access and thrive in denominations consisting of ethnic and social units. It has been identified that growth in membership of some Afro-Caribbean Churches at the United Kingdom are also greatly influenced by the various social and legal services associated with their corporate identity. New members are welcomed to utilize the vast knowledge and services of the Church in the areas of their immigration challenges.  [10]   THE INFLUENCE OF PAST REVIVALS PRINCIPLES ON THE AFRO-CARIBBEAN CHURCH GROWTH. The great historical Revivals such as the Welsh and Azusa Street Revivals that led to origin of Pentecostalism involved a common pre-condition of prayers and qualitative feeding on Gods word. The tradition of continuous prayers and ardent focus on Gods word were continually upheld as constant pattern of services of the Afro-Caribbean Churches. This consistency according to McGavran led to: Holy Living, operating with empowerment of the Holy Spirit and having a genuine drive for evangelism. The dynamics of Revivals within a Church actually lead to positive impact on Church Growth as the members of the Church channel their spiritual energy into evangelism.  [11]   Conclusion. When the Afro-Caribbean success in Church growth is considered in the light of McGavran principles and the critiques of some aspect of the Church Growth movement such as Newbigin and Elmer Towns, I concur with the McGavran arguments that having an increasing number of attendance in the Church is more beneficial to the Church members notwithstanding their status as mere Church goers or truly born again Christians. However, despite the likely presence of mixed multitude in the congregation of Afro-Caribbean Churches, I believe that as long as they are in an environment where the word of God is continually preached, the Holy Spirit will perfect their salvation with time. Consequently, the remnant theology and the excuse that highly populated Churches might possess very few perfected Christians, is not an excuse to be slack in the area of adopting and planning a modern day strategy geared towards soul-winning.
